Why heroes don't change the world

Heroism is overrated. It is always movements that lead to large-scale change, though our dominant cultural narrative of change focuses on individuals. It is not naive to think you can change the world, it is naive to think you could be in the world and not change it, but that change happens in community. David LaMotte is a songwriter, speaker and author. He has performed over 3500 concerts and released thirteen full-length CDs of primarily original music, as well as four books, touring in all of the fifty states and on five of the seven continents over his 35-year career. He holds a master’s degree in International Studies, Peace, and Conflict Resolution from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, which he attended as a Rotary Peace Fellow. He is the former Clerk of the AFSC Nobel Peace Prize Nominating Committee, and a co-founder of Senderos, Inc., which has been working to support education in Guatemala since 2004. He lives in Black Mountain, North Carolina, with his wife and son, an old dog, and five chickens. The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man signifies a period of suspension and surrender, where letting go of control leads to a new perspective. It represents the necessary sacrifice of the ego to gain spiritual enlightenment.

Why This Mapping?

Because the talk invites a shift in perspective — from the myth of the lone hero to seeing transformation as a collective, relational process — The Hanged Man captures that reframing and surrender of the old narrative.

Reframing & new perspective: The Hanged Man represents a pause and a conscious shift in how you see things — what once looked like “heroes change the world” gets flipped into “movements change the world.” This aligns with the talk’s core pivot away from individual greatness toward shared action. Sacrifice of ego and narrative: The card often symbolizes letting go of a deeply held belief or ego-driven stance. Letting go of the heroic myth mirrors the Hanged Man’s letting go of the comfortable or culturally ingrained story in order to see the bigger picture. Collective awakening over individual action: While the card is individual in imagery, its divinatory meaning points to insight that transcends personal gain — wisdom gained for the benefit of a broader whole rather than self. The talk’s emphasis on community and movements over lone figures resonates with that shift from self to larger relational context.

Reflection Questions

  • What am I holding onto that I need to surrender?
  • How would this situation look if I viewed it from the complete opposite perspective?
  • Where am I playing the martyr instead of making a conscious sacrifice?
